From my early childhood I had always looked on entrepreneurs and business leaders as the heroes. None are perfect but as I matured and more deeply studied business I knew business was doing far more good in the world than not. At 43 years- young I bought a failing business; we survived, then thrived by focusing on long-term win-win relationships with all of our stakeholders. If Conscious Capitalism had existed, I would have been at the time known as an unconscious-conscious-capitalist. I innately knew the right thing to do, but I didn’t yet know the language of Conscious Capitalism. We grew to become the pre-eminent global deep underground mining and project management business in the world.
I exited McIntosh Engineering in 2011, spend a year or so exploring to decide what would be next and discovered Conscious Capitalism. I’d found my tribe and was quickly all-in, as my son Kyle McIntosh and I founded Conscious Capitalism Arizona (CCAZ), at the time the 3rd Chapter in the world, following only Chicago and Australia. I am incredibly proud of the work we did, both in Arizona and in support of what grew to be a network of 50+ global chapters of Conscious Capitalism.
After 10 years of service to the Conscious Capitalism movement, I transitioned to pursue other life objectives, including now Heroic. Why Heroic and a call to action to join me by participating in a Heroic Activation Arizona ground breaking HeroicAZ soft-launch event on 8 August is offered by the reminder of this blog. For absolute clarity as I offer this opportunity, it is not a case of either / or, it’s simply this – if you’ve been drawn in any way to the Conscious Capitalism movement, I can guarantee you will also be draw to the powerful work being done by Heroic to ensure that 51% of humanity are flourishing by the year 2051.
And for those who truly know me, know this, Heroic Public Benefit Corporation is the most powerful example of a “conscious business” I have seen in my entire 13+ years of involvement in the CC movement. For disclosure, Heroic is a for-profit business, and I am in relative terms a large investor. While Heroic founder Brian Johnson has an intense focus on serving his financial stakeholders, he has an equal focus to achieve the mission that 51% of humanity will be flourishing by 2051. Conscious Capitalism for me is all about a co-equal focus on Purpose + Profit, and a business philosophy that focuses on long-term / win-win relationships with all business stakeholders. That my friends is Heroic in a nutshell.

I’ve known of and followed Brian Johnson for 10 or so years. Initially through his Philosophers Notes subscription business. Then this past October, I received a gift box from Satori Capital (venture capital with a 99-year investment time horizon, a very conscious business model), containing Brian’s new book Arete. I looked at the book, investigated Heroic on-line and was quickly and once again all-in. I participated in a 3-day Heroic event this past May in Austin, and my opportunity to first get to know Brian in-person. Although not a planned outcome, Brian knew about my background and asked if I’d be willing to help start a Heroic chapter-like movement, using all the lessons learned from Conscious Capitalism to create a model others in the Heroic movement could follow. I connected at the event with Stephanie Clerge, and we decided right then and there to partner to co-found Heroic Activation Arizona (HeroicAZ).
We are now in the very beginning stages of forming the Heroic Activation Arizona chapter including planning for a formal launch on 19 October, when Heroic will be in Phoenix for a BIG 3-day event opportunity – Become a Certified Heroic Workshop Instructor – “LITERALLY A CHEAT CODE FOR PERSONAL AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT AND MENTAL PERFORMANCE MASTERY.” And, for all the consultants / coaches that have long been a part of the Conscious Capitalism movement, this is an opportunity to both support an incredibly conscious mission (51/51) AND grow your consulting / coaching business (ie make money) at the same time.
