Continuing Our Business Spot Light- Moxie Girl
Moxie Girl is a wonderful community member in our MAC6 Park Lane Space.
Here is what founder, Amanda Thomas had to say:
1. Why did you start your company?
I started Moxie Girl after 3 years of saying, “Someone needs to start a business that’s LIKE a house cleaning company, but to do the other things around the home.” I had been in the fitness industry for my first 5 years in AZ and I kept meeting women who were overwhelmed with taking care of their homes. I kept thinking that if these women had an extra hand around the house, they could focus so much more time on their families and careers instead of housework. I knew that by helping them in their homes, I could help their relationships improve.
2. What has been the most surprising thing as you have grown your business?
In our first 7 years of business, we didn’t have a single client get divorced. At first I thought it was a coincidence, but we’ve come to realize that if a couple is arguing over the dishes and the laundry, they aren’t talking about the real, bigger issues in their marriage. Also, on the employee side, I’m still amazed at how many intelligent, educated, and motivated women are willing to work in a home services company. We’ve had a number of employees who’ve worked with us while getting their undergrad and masters degrees, or after they’ve left successful corporate jobs. It’s shown us the importance of company culture and having leaders who are focused on team goals.
3. If you were to do it all over again what would you do differently?
I would have hired an assistant earlier. It wasn’t until I hired someone and told her that she wasn’t allowed to schedule me to work in homes that I actually got myself out of working in homes. I was so busy working IN the business that I needed to hire someone to hold me accountable to RUNNING the business. A fun side note is that the woman I hired as a 10 hour a week admin assistant has been with us 3 years and is now the woman running the day to day operations of the company. She keeps me in line and focused, which is not easy!
4. Where do you hope to be in 10 years?
I don’t tend to think more than 3 years in the future, but by that time I would like to have traveled to more countries and been able to teach our son about different cultures.
5. What’s one thing most people don’t know about you?
After 8 years of being entrepreneurs, my husband and I needed to take some time and invest in ourselves. We spent the 9 months I was pregnant living in a vintage, 22′ motor home and traveling the southern United States. In the last year we’ve been to 24 states.
